"Gay Marriage"

Last month President George W. Bush endorsed the idea of a constitutional amendment in support of traditional marriage between one man and one woman.

Proponents of homosexual marriage have said that they only want rights equal to those of "straight" persons. In fact, gay men and women already have the same marriage rights that are currently enjoyed by heterosexual men and women. That is the right to marry any eligible and willing person of the opposite sex.

What then does the gay community want? Nothing less than the redefinition of marriage itself. Since marriage is the foundation of the family, a new definition of family will be the result.

These efforts have come about through various court decisions, which have attempted to establish that homosexual partners have the right to marry each other.

Now in Larimer county, we cannot even build a new bridge over the Poudre River without conducting an environmental impact study, including a search for the endangered Preble's Meadow Jumping Mouse. Only after a thorough assessment of the multiple risks involved, can any construction begin.

But activist judges are now attempting to tamper with marriage and family-- society's most fundamental unit--without any consideration of the unforeseen and potentially catastrophic consequences. They are convinced of the rightness of their own political cause. And in the name of that cause, they are willing to discard the experience of millenia and put our whole society at risk with their radical experiments.

While our society may wish to change the definition of marriage and family at some time, we will do so by a democratic process, not because some radical judge decides that the time has come. Currently a majority of the people in the United States do not agree with the political agenda of the Massachusetts Supreme Court.

The only way to remedy this situation is by an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, stating clearly what the supreme law of the land is, endorsed by the will of the people. The Defense of Marriage Act, which President Clinton signed into law eight years ago, can be struck down by the kind of radical activist judicial review which we have seen just this month.

I support President Bush and Marilyn Musgrave, our Representative, in the effort to pass an amemdment to preserve traditional marriage. This amendment will eliminate the scores of lawsuits which will surely result if it is not passed.

One might ask why the gay community is pushing so hard for same-sex marriage at this time, knowing the kind of public backlash that they will face. I can only give my opinion, based on past observation of homosexual activism. Homosexuals seem to be driven to push their agenda. They have never been satisfied with mere acceptance. They want the approval of society--approval that they seemingly do not feel in themselves.
